Meet Your Mentor: John Welsby

In 2006, I began my career as a software engineer in Sydney. The next year, at 21, I suffered a total psychotic breakdown. I was diagnosed with schizophrenia—likely drug-induced—and spent six months in a psychiatric hospital.

That was the beginning of a long and difficult recovery journey. With the support of my family and medical professionals, I slowly rebuilt my life. Along the way, I discovered the Hero’s Journey, a powerful framework for personal transformation, and I found strength in my Christian faith.

Over time, I began sharing my story publicly through a local mental health nonprofit, MIEACT. That experience led me to coaching, speaking, and mental health advocacy. Today, I’m studying counselling at Charles Sturt University, and I work with other men who are walking their own path of healing and growth.

If you’re navigating mental illness or psychosocial disability, I’d be honoured to walk alongside you. More about John

FAQs

Quick Answers to Your Top Questions About Our Mentoring Services

How do I know if I'm eligible for peer mentoring services?

As part of your NDIS plan, you will have access to a support coordinator. This person can tell you if you are eligible for Peer Mentoring support. This is normally funded under your plan-managed capacity building budget.

What can I expect from a mentoring session?

During a mentoring session, expect a supportive environment where you work one-on-one to discuss goals and strategies to overcome challenges. We can also help you set goals, and get clarity about where you are going in life.

What qualifications do you have?

John is a Speakers Institute Certified Coach https://myspeakersinstitute.com/certified-coaches and is currently studying counselling at Charles Sturt University. He has a Working With Vulnerable People Card which is authorised for NDIS Activities. He has a current police check.

How do I use my NDIS plan?

You must be plan-managed or self-managed to use your NDIS plan for this peer mentoring support. You pay up front out of your own pocket, and will receive an invoice. Send the invoice to the plan manager to be reimbursed for the full cost (up to your plan limit). Normally the funding will come from your Capacity Building budget.

Are there long-term commitments required when signing up for services?

No, Joanine Enterprises offers flexible engagement terms. You can set terms based on your specific needs. We recommend a package of 6 sessions to start, with additional sessions available if desired.

How can I measure the progress I am making with my mentor?

Progress is tracked through regular assessments and feedback sessions with your mentor. We establish clear, measurable goals at the start and review these regularly.
